Secret Knock

Description - My final project is a door lock that listens for your personalized knock. The lock uses an arduino board and a piezo speaker and will not unlock the door unless the specific pattern is used as a knock.

Problems - The biggest problem that I encountered was finding the right parts to build the project. First of all, I waited too long to order the motor and had to try and buy one through a store. This was 100% my own fault but to make matters worse, every Radioshack in Southeast Michigan decided that they no longer wanted to sell components (or the components i needed) for the arduino. I have been trying to find a gear reduction motor that will fit inside of a 1/2 inch PVC pipe and have enough torque to turn a dead lock on an ordinary door. Tougher task than what was expected by far. The next BIG issue was finding a specific PVC pipe part that unfortunantely no hardware stores feel necessary to carry?! The part in question is a 5-way PVC pipe connector. It is used to hold the motor in place to turn the lock on the door, and also to connect the entire project together. Needless to say, it was a pretty important part. Maybe i was just being lazy but i also felt that i was in a little over my head, with all things included. The project that i chose required a pretty extensive knowledge of a lot of things that i didnt know about previously. I do feel though that i came out of this with learning some pretty cool stuff that i would have had no idea of in the past.

What if? - I think if i could go back and do this again i would definitely change a few things with the design of the project and also with the code and internal things. To cosmetically fix the project i would have change the design of the PVC pipe and possibly used a smaller, more efficient device. With almost two feet of pipe, you can imagine that it looks somewhat out of the ordinary attached to the inside of your door. I kind of invisioned something more along the lines of a small box that fit over the entire lock as opposed to over the door as well. The box would sit directly over the lock and the secret knock would be used to lock, and also unlock the door. This would allow the person that had the device to keep it on their door without it looking out of the ordinary, and would also allow for the more artistic folk the opportunity to better decorate, and enhance the project. The main thing that i would like to change about the code itself would be to implement some sort of 'sleep' mode. A minor issue involving the project is that the battery is continually giving power to the arduino no matter what is happening. If a sleep mode could be added, it would be more eco-friendly and less expensive. With the sleep mode, im sure a 9v battery would last for a little over a millenium due to the fact that when it does run, it runs for only a short period of time.
