This potentiometer does the job of regulating the current of the circuit, though it doesn't do a very good job. It is very unreliable and does not provide a constant resistance, causing the LEDs to light up in an uneven pattern, speeding up and slowing down sporadically. The "real" potentiometer does a better job of applying a steady resistance to the circuit and provides a wider range of resistances that can be applied.
